Monument is located outside of Vicksburg National Military Park on former park property in the City of Vicksburg, on the southeast corner of Wisconsin Avenue and Autumn Drive. Also a marker designating a sharpshooter's line on the west side of Wisconsin Avenue approximately 75 yards south of the intersection of Wisconsin Ave. & Autumn Drive. This unit was attached to Col. Isaac C. Pugh's 1st Brigade of Brig. Gen. Jacob G. Lauman's 4th Division, Maj. Gen'ls John A. McClernand (relieved of command 19 June 1863) & Edward O.C. Ord's XIII Army Corps and was commanded by Lt. Col. John H. Nale. The regiment entered the campaign at Young's Point, LA about 15 May 1863, and took a position on the Vicksburg investment line about 25 May 1863 serving on the sharpshooter's line from 9 June 1863 until the end of the siege. Did You Know?

Thomas O. Selfridge

Thomas O. Selfridge, captain of the USS Cairo, commanded three boats which sank during the war. Each began with the letter "C"-Cumberland, Cairo, and Conestoga. The coincidence was noted after the Conestoga sank, and Selfridge was assigned to the USS Osage, which survived to the end of the war.
