Monument located on Union Avenue 200 yards south of the Iowa Memorial. Company D stone marker located on the north side of Union Avenue approximately .6 mile west of Thayer's Approach (Park Tour Stop #6). This unit was attached as escort to Maj. Frederick Steele's 1st Division of Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman's XV Army Corps and was commanded by Lt. Jonathan Kershner. [Refer to Steele of new York.]

Did You Know?

Old Douglas Headstone, Cedar Hill Cemetery

The 43d Mississippi Infantry's mascot, Douglas the Camel, remained with the regiment until Vicksburg where he was killed by Union sharpshooters. Douglas is honored with his own grave marker in Vicksburg's Cedar Hill Cemetery.
