This unit was attached to Brig. Gen. Daniel W. Adams' Brigade of Maj. Gen. John C. Breckinridge's Division, Gen. Joseph E. Johnston's Army of Relief, Department of the West, and commanded by Lt. Col. Henry Maury. The division arrived at Jackson, MS, on 1 June 1863, from the Department of Tennessee. On 4 July 1863, its headquarters were near Bolton, MS. Old Douglas Headstone, Cedar Hill Cemetery

The 43d Mississippi Infantry's mascot, Douglas the Camel, remained with the regiment until Vicksburg where he was killed by Union sharpshooters. Douglas is honored with his own grave marker in Vicksburg's Cedar Hill Cemetery.
