This unit was attached to Col. Bazil D. Meek's 4th Brigade, of Col. John K. Mizner's Cavalry Division as the 7th Tennessee Cavalry, and commanded by Capt. Asa N. Hayes and Capt. Pleasant K. Parsons. The detachment was stationed at Grand Junction, TN. [Refer to Edwin Bearss' The Vicksburg Campaign, Volume III, page 1143.]

Old Douglas Headstone, Cedar Hill Cemetery

The 43d Mississippi Infantry's mascot, Douglas the Camel, remained with the regiment until Vicksburg where he was killed by Union sharpshooters. Douglas is honored with his own grave marker in Vicksburg's Cedar Hill Cemetery.
