Monument is located on Sherman Circle. This unit was attached to Col. John Mason Loomis' 1st Brigade of Brig. Gen. William Sooy Smith's 1st Division, Maj. Cadwallader C. Washburn's XVI Army Corps (Detachment) and commanded by Maj. John B. Harris & Lt. Col. Robert A. Gillmore . The regiment embarked at Memphis on or about 8 June 1863 and arrived at Snyder's Bluff on 12 June 1863. It took position there and assisted in fortifying that point. Gen. Sherman ordered the division to take position on Oak Ridge from Neily's on the right to the postoffice on the left and to fortify that line. The division remained in that position until the end of the siege. [Refer to page 141, Volume I of the WPA Monumentation Survey Books.]
