Listed on the South Carolina State Memorial. This unit was attached to Brig. Gen. States Rights Gist's Brigade, of Maj. Gen. William H.T. Walker's Division, Gen. Joseph E. Johnston's Army of Relief, Department of the West, and commanded by Col. C.H. Stevens and Lt. Col. Ellison D. Capers (wounded 14 May 1863). President Abraham Lincoln, in speaking of Vicksburg's importance, is reputed to have stated early during the Civil War, "See what a lot of land these fellows hold, of which Vicksburg is the key, the war can never be brought to a close until that key is in our pocket."
