  • Illinois Monument Closure - Wednesday, September 24, 2014

    The Illinois Monument and immediate area will be closed to all visitors and tour traffic beginning at 8:00 a.m. and remain closed until contractors and lift equipment operators complete necessary measurements required for bat exclusion project work.

Iron tablet located outside of Vicksburg National Military Park, on former park property in the City of Vicksburg, on the east side of South Confederate Avenue at the entrance to All Saints School, and regimental monument on the east side of South Confederate Avenue approximately 0.1 mile south of All Saints School.

Old Douglas Headstone, Cedar Hill Cemetery

The 43d Mississippi Infantry's mascot, Douglas the Camel, remained with the regiment until Vicksburg where he was killed by Union sharpshooters. Douglas is honored with his own grave marker in Vicksburg's Cedar Hill Cemetery.
