This unit was attached to the Cavalry command of Maj. Gen. Franklin Gardner's 3d Military District at Port Hudson, LA, Lt. Gen. John C. Pemberton's Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana, and commanded by Capt. W. V. Lester. Originally known as Company K, 1st Mississippi Cavalry, the regiment was re-designated as Company I.
