116th Illinois Infantry
Monument is located on Union Avenue 500 yards south of Graveyard Road. Also a marker designating the assault of 19 May 1863 located on Graveyard Road opposite the Stockade Redan; a marker designating the assault of 22 May 1863 located on Confederate Avenue 250' behind the Missouri Memorial and a marker designating a sharpshooter's line 250 yards south of the Missouri Memorial on the scout's trail. This unit was attached to Col. Giles A. Smith's 1st Brigade of Maj. Gen. Francis P. Blair's 2nd Division, Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman's XV Army Corps and was commanded by Col. Nathan W. Tupper.
Did You Know?
Thomas O. Selfridge, captain of the USS Cairo, commanded three boats which sank during the war. Each began with the letter "C"-Cumberland, Cairo, and Conestoga. The coincidence was noted after the Conestoga sank, and Selfridge was assigned to the USS Osage, which survived to the end of the war.
