More than 200 local residents took the Oath of Allegiance and became United States citizens during a special ceremony on July 3rd at San Juan National Historic Site. These new Americans hail from 22 countries, including Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Germany, Guatemala, Honduras, Jordan, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Spain, Saint Lucia, Uruguay, Venezuela. Honorable U.S. District Judge Aida Delgado Colon presided over the ceremony on the plaza of Fort San Cristobal with Congressman Luis Fortuno PR, giving the Keynote Address. This was one of several "Celebrate Citizenship, Celebrate America" ceremonies that U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will host during the July 4th week, many of which will be held at National Park Sites throughout the country. In all, USCIS will celebrate our nation’s 230th birthday by welcoming more than 18,000 new American citizens this week. Despite receiving over an inch of rain in the hours preceding the event and receiving over 500 people, including the new citizens, their families and VIP’s, the Park and USCIS staff did an excellent job of working together in making this event a success.
