COMMEMORATION OF JOSE CAMPECHE: “CAMPECHADA”

San Juan National Historic Site, in collaboration with other government agencies, will host a series of activities to celebrate the lifeof 18th century Puerto Rican painter José Campeche. The commemoration, named Campechada, will take place from Friday, November 18 - Sunday, November 20, 2011.

San Juan National Historic Site staff will conduct several activities at the park during the weekend.On Friday, from 5:00pm-6:30pm, the San Cristóbal Detachment (18th century military reenactment group) will join others in an inaugural parade from Plaza Colón to the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture.On Saturday and Sunday, from 2:00pm - 2:30pm, the San Cristóbal Detachment will march from Castillo San Cristóbal to Castillo San Felipe del Morro. From 2:30pm-5:00pm, commemorative activities on the grounds of El Morro will feature a historical militia encampment, military drills, musket and cannon demonstrations and educational programs to be offered by the San Cristóbal Detachment.

The park will also host musical performances sponsored by the Campechada collaboration on the grounds of El Morro includingthe Philharmonic Orchestra on Friday from 7:30pm-8:30pm and the Symphonic Orchestra on Saturday from 8:00pm-9:00pm.Architectural tours of the 16 sites related to the life of José Campeche will start in San Cristóbal (Calle Norzagaray plaza) on Saturday and Sunday from 9:00am-5:00pm. Participants completing the tours will receive a Campechada Passport which on the same day will grant free access to the inside of the fortifications, as well as a few others Old San Juan historical sites, by showing the Passport at the entrances.Additional commemorative activities will be held by sponsoring agencies at other locations throughout Old San Juan.

San Juan National Historic Site is comprised of Castillo San Felipe del Morro, Castillo San Cristóbal, Fort San Juan de La Cruz (El Cañuelo), the San Juan Gate, and most of the City Wall. The site is open every day except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day, from 9:00AM to 6:00PM and until 7:00pm on Tuesdays when the Lelolai Festival is held in the main plaza, San Cristóbal.Admission to San Juan NHS is $3 for adults
