Fish

A Round fish with colorful markings including a yellow-orange belly

The pumpkinseed sunfish is a colorful relative, but the St. Croix is known for its Smallmouth Bass fishing.

Ellen Edmondson from The Inland Fishes of New York State" by C. Lavett Smith

The Riverway is composed of two rivers that provide excellent fish habitat. The Namekagon is best known for its trout fishing, while the St. Croix is nationally known for smallmouth bass fishing. But those are not the only fish in these waters. See the checklist below for some of the other fish that call the Riverway home.

In 2009 a study was completed taking a historical look at cold water fish habitat on the Namekagon. The report summarizes fish habitat conditions and fish species composition by era through Native American early European-American Exploration and Settlement (1831-1860) through Logging (1861-1901), Recreation (1902-1961), and Reforestation and Recovery (1961-Present).
