San Antonio Missions National Historical Park and Alamo Area Texas Nature Challenge invites families and kids to explore the Texas outdoors this summer between June 2 and August 3. Local parks and natural areas have developed "challenges" to complete, designed for family fun and nature exploration. Challenges are provided in both English and Spanish. The following sites are participating in the Alamo Region (San Antonio area): San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, Mitchell Lake Audubon Center. San Antonio Zoo, Green Spaces Alliance, Natural Bridge Caverns, Friedrich/Eisenhower Park, San Antonio River Foundation (in Wilson County), Government Canyon State Natural Area, Medina River Natural Area, San Antonio Botanical Garden, Edwards Aquifer Authority, Brackenridge Park Conservancy, and the Witte Museum. Opening Ceremony will be held Saturday, June 2 from 10am - 11am at Mission San José. An explanation of the Nature Challenges, followed by a reptile presentation, will take place. At the conclusion of the Opening Ceremony, teams are encouraged to complete their first challenge, Mission Quest, on the San Antonio Missions. Closing Ceremony will be held at Joske Pavilion at Brack-enridge Park on August 11, 2012 from 9a-11a. Participation prizes will be awarded at that time. Scrapbooks, drawings, photographs, logos, and essays are due August 3, 2012 to the San Antonio Botanical Garden by 4pm. There may be an entrance fee to some sites. After registering, go to http://naturechallenge.tamu.edu/alamo/ to download each site's "challenge" to take with you. Some "challenges" are offered at specific times and places, so check each challenge carefully. You have 9 weeks to visit as many participating parks and nature areas in the San Antonio area as you can. You will view native, & not so native, wildlife; you may be dipping your feet in creeks; finding plants that Native Americans used in their everyday lives; and photographing, drawing and writing about your observations. You will be learning more about nature and science in your own neighborhood.
