H-58 closed between Twelvemile Beach and Hurricane River Campgrounds (3.4 miles) as Alger County reconstructs and paves the road.

Little Beaver Lake Campground will be closed for the season beginning Tuesday, September 7.

Wild Beauty on the Lake Superior Shore

Sandstone cliffs, beaches, sand dunes, waterfalls, lakes, forest, and shoreline beckon you to visit Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Hiking, camping, sightseeing, and four season outdoor opportunities abound. The Lakeshore hugs the Lake Superior shoreline for more than 40 miles. Lake Superior is the largest, deepest, coldest, and most pristine of all the Great Lakes.

 

Backcountry Camping

Forty-two miles of the North Country National Scenic Trail are within Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Located along the Lake Superior shoreline, hikers find a spectacular place for backcountry camping, hiking, and relaxation. Permits are required for overnight camping.

Drive-in Campgrounds

The lakeshore has three drive-in campgrounds located at Little Beaver Lake, Twelvemile Beach, and Hurricane River. Camping is first-come, first-serve (fee).  Sorry, no reservations.  The lakeshore's rustic campgrounds are a home away from home for many visitors each year.

Pets at the Lakeshore

Pets are permitted at drive-in campgrounds, along roads, and in designated developed areas such as Munising Falls and Miners Castle. Pets must be kept on a 6-foot leash at all times. Pets are not permitted in the Lakeshore backcountry.

Beaver Basin Wilderness

On March 30, President Obama signed the Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009 into law. Among other actions, this Act created the Beaver Basin Wilderness within Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.

Climate

The Lakeshore climate varies as much as the seasons. Summertime high temperatures can reach the 90's with much cooler evening temperatures. Temperatures in the 70's and 80's are more common. Wintertime temperatures in the 20's are common. Below zero weather is unusual or short-lived. Snowfall averages 140 inches each year. Layered clothing for changing weather is recommended.

Did You Know?
In 1992, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore began installing photovoltaic powered well pump systems at its drive-in campgrounds. All remote water wells within the lakeshore are now solar-powered.
