Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and the City of Portage, Indiana have released a draft Environmental Assessment (EA) for a proposed lakefront development in Portage.  The city, in cooperation with the National Park Service, (NPS) has begun the process of planning a park on the Lake Michigan shoreline within the boundaries of the National Lakeshore.

The Environmental Assessment is available for public review and comment until June 15, 2007. Copies of the EA can be reviewed at the Dorothy Buell Memorial Visitor Center, located at the southwest corner of the intersection of Indiana Highway 49 and U.S. Highway 20, and at the National Lakeshore Headquarters at 1100 N. Mineral Springs Road in Porter, Indiana.  The EA can also be viewed through the NPS planning website at: http://parkplanning.nps.gov. Once public comment is considered, changes are incorporated, and final approval is granted, the Environmental Assessment will be the guiding document for the site’s development.

If you wish to make comments in writing, please send them to Superintendent, Attention: Management Assistant, Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, 1100 North Mineral Springs Road, Porter, Indiana 46304.  Comments can also be made via the http://parkplanning.nps.gov website.  In addition, a public open house will be held on Wednesday, May 30 from 4 pm – 7 pm at the Portage Yacht Club, 1370 Indiana Route 249, Portage, IN.  A project team will be available at the open house to answer questions and take comments.  For more information, contact the Superintendent’s office at 219-926-7561, extension 410.
