Flowering plants at the Mound City Group.
The 1,170 acres at Hopewell Culture National Historical Park is a mix of woodlands, riparian areas, prairie, fallow fields, mowed grass, and wetlands. There are approximately 462 species of plants found throughout the park, with diligent and observant volunteers and staff discovering more species each year.

Pink heelsplitter mussel

Freshwater mussels were an important resource for Hopewellian people. Mussels were used as food, provided pearls for ornaments and shells were utilized for hoes. Although plentiful during the Middle Woodland period, over-harvesting and low water quality have reduced their numbers drastically today.
