These photographs are from John Wesley Powell's second expedition (1871) down the Colorado River through what would later be known as the Grand Canyon. There were no photographs made during the first (1869) trip. Powell and his men were sent into this uncharted territory by the United States Geological Survey to map and survey the Colorado River.


 
MARY COLTER, ARCHITECT AND DECORATOR FOR THE SANTA FE RR, 1902-1948

Who Was Mary Colter?
Chief Architect and Decorator for the Fred Harvey Company/ Santa Fe Railroad, during the first half of the 20th Century, Colter designed buildings where park visitors could rest, stay, eat and shop. Using local materials to create rustic buildings in the Southwestern style, she built many of her most unique structures along the South Rim of the Grand Canyon.

Mental attitude, adequate water and food consumption are absolutely essential to the success of any Grand Canyon hike. The day hiker and the overnight backpacker must be prepared for the lack of water, extreme heat and cold, and the isolation characteristic of the Grand Canyon.
