Grand Canyon, Ariz. - Sobriety safety checkpoints will be set up within Grand Canyon National Park this holiday season in an effort to assure the safety of park visitors and residents.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, nearly four in ten fatalities during the Christmas holidays occur in alcohol impaired driving crashes. Explains Grand Canyon Chief Ranger Bill Wright: "Last year, over 100,000 visitors spent at least part of their holidays in Grand Canyon National Park. Our goal is for everyone to have a safe and enjoyable holiday here, and that includes ensuring that they aren't involved in an alcohol related accident."

Checkpoint dates and locations will be randomly selected and will not be announced in advance.

The National Park Service would like to remind everyone that the best gift you can give your friends and family this holiday season is making the appropriate arrangements to get home safely after your holiday celebrations.
