WEST GLACIER, MONT. – The National Weather Service is predicting rain and snow throughout the weekend for Glacier National Park, with new snow accumulations of a foot or more throughout the park above 4,000 feet. Upper elevations already received about a foot of new snow this week. Because of the winter-like storm, and to ensure visitor and employee safety, road access will be adjusted as conditions warrant.
Here are the current road access points as of 12 p.m. Thursday, April 29 which are all subject-to-change depending on current weather conditions. Vehicle access on the west side of Going-to-the-Sun Road (Sun Road) is 10 miles to Lake McDonald Lodge. On the east side of Sun Road vehicle access is allowed for six miles to Rising Sun.
Beginning May 1, the Apgar Visitor Center is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for information and backcountry permits. Visitors can also stop at park headquarters in West Glacier for information Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. General park information is also available by phone, 406-888-7800, including the specific location of hiker/bicycle closures.
