WEST GLACIER, MONT. – The National Weather Service is predicting rain and snow throughout the weekend for Glacier National Park, with new snow accumulations of a foot or more throughout the park above 4,000 feet. Upper elevations already received about a foot of new snow this week. Because of the winter-like storm, and to ensure visitor and employee safety, road access will be adjusted as conditions warrant.

Visitors are encouraged to get the most current road conditions for Glacier National Park by calling 511, the Montana Department of Transportation Traveler Information System. If a phone does not support 511, call 1-800-226-7623. Both numbers are toll-free. Select “Glacier Park Tourist Information” from the main menu to hear Glacier’s road report. Visitors can also call Glacier at 406 888-7800, and press 2, for current park road conditions. An interactive map showing current vehicle access points is available online at: https://www.nps.gov/applications/glac/roadstatus/roadstatus.cfm.

Here are the current road access points as of 12 p.m. Thursday, April 29 which are all subject-to-change depending on current weather conditions. Vehicle access on the west side of Going-to-the-Sun Road (Sun Road) is 10 miles to Lake McDonald Lodge. On the east side of Sun Road vehicle access is allowed for six miles to Rising Sun.

Spring construction on the Sun Road has been temporarily halted because of weather conditions. There are usually no restrictions in effect for hiking or bicycling over the weekend or after work hours, but that is always subject to change. Visitors are encouraged to be prepared for all weather conditions, as they can change rapidly this time of year.

On the park’s west side, both the Camas Road and the Quarter Circle Bridge Road are now open. Kintla Road is open from Polebridge to Big Prairie. Vehicles can access the Rocky Point trailhead on the Inside North Fork Road, but the road is closed to vehicles from the Fish Creek gate to Polebridge.

On the east side of the park, the Two Medicine Road is temporarily closed at Running Eagle Falls due to weather. Many Glacier Road has been temporarily closed due to recent snowfall. All other park roads remain closed to motorized vehicles due to snow and ice.

Glacier National Park remains open year round for various recreational opportunities and camp grounds and concessions will start opening in the upcoming weeks. Schedules are available on Glacier’s website under News Releases: https://www.nps.gov/glac/parknews/newsreleases.htm.

Beginning May 1, the Apgar Visitor Center is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for information and backcountry permits. Visitors can also stop at park headquarters in West Glacier for information Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. General park information is also available by phone, 406-888-7800, including the specific location of hiker/bicycle closures.
