Fire Island National Seashore has scheduled a variety of ranger-guided walks and other special programs for this February and March. Most programs are free or include a nominal program fee.
While the 613-acre William Floyd Estate is closed over the winter, its grounds will be open for several special weekend tours. Naturalist MaryLaura Lamont is conducting a Great Backyard Bird Walk on Saturday, February 13. This program helps contribute citizen science data for an annual bird count hosted by the National Audubon Society and Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology. The Old Mastic Way to the Bay walk is offered on Sunday, February 21 and March 28. A Winter Woods walk is offered on Sunday, February 28. Each of these free programs starts at 9:00 a.m. and involves a 2- to 3-mile roundtrip hike. Several Inside the Park's Collections programs are offered this winter (February 7, February 27, March 7, March 14). Space is limited and reservations are required. Fire Island National Seashore's Wilderness Visitor Center is open Wednesday through Sunday over the winter. Special children's programs in February focus on studies of the night sky. Seaside Stories and Crafts: Starry Night will be offered on Saturday, February 6, at 2:00 p.m.; The Junior Ranger Workshop: Exploring the Night Sky is scheduled for Saturday, February 27 at 6:00 p.m. Ranger-guided walks on the beach include a Wilderness Hike for Nature Lovers on Saturday, February 13, and Exploring the Salt Marsh on Friday, February 19, 9:00 a.m. to noon. The Fire Island Lighthouse, open daily all year, is also providing special programs and tours. Evening tower tours are offered Saturday, February 13 ("Lighthouses are for Lovers," $30/couple) and on Sunday, February 28 ($15/person). During Presidents Week, February 15-19, a daily children's activity will be offered at 11:00 a.m. The Fire Island Lighthouse Preservation Society charges an interpretive program fee for these programs and for lighthouse tower tours. For all outdoor programs, pack a snack, dress for the weather and wear sturdy shoes. Bring a sense of adventure and explore the seashore in all its seasons!
