Everglades National Park Celebrates Poetry Month Homestead, FL: Visitors will encounter Everglades-inspired poetry throughout Everglades National Park this April during the O, Miami Poetry Festival. This festival aims to create opportunities for Miami-Dade County residents and visitors to encounter a poem during April 2011. O, Miami Poetry Festival is produced by the University of Wynwood www.universityofwynwood.org and funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. Visit www.omiami.org. In partnership with this event, forty-one brightly-colored banners, capturing the voices of the Everglades through the words and rhythms of Artist-In-Residence-In-Everglades (AIRIE) poets, will be displayed throughout the park’s trails and visitor centers. The Artist-In-Residence-In-Everglades Program allows artists to become immersed in the Everglades wilderness and find inspiration for their art. Visit www.airie.org for more information. AIRIE poets will present two Everglades poetry readings as part of the event. “In a park known for its spectacular and diverse wildlife, the art and voices of AIRIE artists reveal other unique, and oftentimes missed, dimensions of this special place,” said Superintendent Dan Kimball. As the AIRIE Program marks its ten-year anniversary in April, this month of poetry will share the symphony of the Everglades through the words of AIRIE poets. This collaborative effort between AIRIE and O, Miami Poetry Festival provides residents and visitors of Miami the opportunity to better enjoy and understand the endangered Everglades wetland. The public is invited to both poetry readings featuring the words and voices of AIRIE poets Roger Mitchell, Mary Kate Azcuy, Anne McCrary-Sullivan, and Michael Hettich. Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden will hold a O, Miami-sponsored poetry reading featuring the AIRIE poets at 1:00pm on Friday, April 22, 2011, coinciding with Earth Day and free entry to the gardens. Everglades National Park will also host a poetry reading with the AIRIE poets at the Ernest Coe Visitor Center Theatre at 2:00pm on Saturday, April 23, 2011.
