National Junior Ranger Day Celebrated at Cape Lookout National Seashore

HARKERS ISLAND, NC -- Come help Cape Lookout National Seashore celebrate National Junior Ranger Day and National Park Week on Saturday, April 21, 2012, from 12:00 noon until 4:00 p.m. All of the activities will take place at the Harkers Island Visitor Center of Cape Lookout National Seashore.

There are over 300 National park sites that offer Junior Ranger programs. The Junior Ranger Program began in the 1960s and was developed to encourage kids and their parents to "Explore, Learn About and Protect" their national parks. Thousands of Park Stewards have been certified as Junior Rangers and with the new participants thousands more will be certified on National Junior Ranger Day.

Scheduled activities are:

12:00 noon Kite flying - Bring a kite or make one here.

1:00 p.m. Surf Rescue Re-enactment - With everyone's help we will attempt to rescue Sailor Sam from a wrecked ship.

2:00 p.m. Nature Hike - As you walk through an old maritime forest see if you can find all the items on the Scavenger Hunt List.

3:00 p.m. In Case of Emergency - Explore the many vehicles used by Law Enforcement Rangers and local Fire Departments.

Ongoing activities will include:

Seashore Crafts - Nature provides numerous supplies for take-home crafts

Ranger Dress-up - Pretend to be one of the many types of rangers that work in our National Parks

Outdoor Games - Challenge your friends in some outdoor games, like Croquet and Backyard Bass
