Date: December 18, 2009

Sacajawea and Jitterbug, two new "Outer Banks" ponies, have joined the Ocracoke Island herd and are acclimating to their new environment. Shortly after arrival, under grey and cloudy skies, they were introduced to the members of their new herd and released. The National Park Service adopted the two fillies from the Foundation for Shackleford Horses, Inc. in Beaufort, NC. NPS photo 1(Jitterbug)  NPS photo 2(Sacajawea)

Did You Know?

Giant Water Flea

This is not a space alien, even though it has a transparent body, wings, and a very large eye.  Giant water fleas grow up to 2 cm long, and are a food source for small fish that shelter in the sound.

You can swim with them in the sound-side waters off Cape Hatteras National Seashore.
