For the second season, a group of young University of Vermont students have traveled to the Outer Banks Group national parks to assist with many park "springtime sprucing-up" projects. These energetic young students recently performed valuable work at all three national park locations providing much needed assistance to park staff.Outside work conditions have been anything but "spring-like" and difficult, but the crew members gained valuable insight into these national park units and the cold temperatures did not seem to bother this group!

The Alternative Spring Break service projects, a program that began in 1991, is offered in early March in many universities in cooperation with federal land management agencies such as the National Park Service. These young people are encouraged to engage in activities and assist with much-needed projects that might otherwise not be accomplished prior to the busy summer visitation months.Their week-long stay has proven to be very productive, accomplishing many tasks including, beach clean-up detail in front of, and among the dunes and parking lots, of Coquina Beach and the Buxton Lighthouse Beach, both popular swim beach and lifeguarded areas of Cape Hatteras National Seashore.Stairs and floor levels of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse as well as interior walls and handrails were cleaned.

They visited Wright Brothers National Memorial and Fort Raleigh National Historic Site as part of their visit to the Outer Banks and interacted with many park staff and local residents. The National Park Service extends a warm thank you to the students and residents who welcomed them to the area!
