Island Explorer Bus Stop Public Information Meeting

The National Park Service at Acadia National Park is planning a project to improve passenger drop off and pick up sites for Island Explorer (IE) buses. Bus stops will be improved at Echo Lake Beach, Acadia Mountain trailhead, Cadillac North Ridge trailhead, Bubble Pond parking area, Bubble Rock trailhead, and Parkman Mountain parking area. The park will host an informal open house to present alternative designs, seek input, and answer questions about the project.  It will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, February 10, in the administration building at park headquarters, located on the Eagle Lake Road in Bar Harbor.

The goals of the project are to accommodate and encourage increased usage of the Explorer bus system at congested sites, improve safety, inter-modal traffic flow and way-finding.  Site improvements will retain the character, aesthetics, and natural and cultural resources of the site.  In addition, all improvements will be universally accessible and minimize additional pavement at a limited cost.

The project also includes publishing a unified design guide for all Island Explorer bus stops in the park, and similar suggestions for fixtures at stops in villages and commercial locations where the Explorer stops.
