Subsistence Hunting in Wrangell-St. Elias

Both federal subsistence and State of Alaska sport hunting are permitted in Wrangell-St. Elias National Preserve. State sport harvests are regulated by the Alaska Board of Game while federal subsistence harvests are regulated by the Federal Subsistence Board.

  • Subsistence Hunting is permitted in both the Park and Preserve.
  • Sport Hunting is permitted in the Preserve ONLY.

To be eligible to hunt in the park or preserve under federal subsistence regulations, you must be considered a local, rural resident. Are YOU eligible to subsistence hunt?

Federal subsistence hunting permits are available at park visitor centers.
