National Park Service Southeast Regional Director Patricia Hooks announced today the selection of Michael Murray as superintendent of Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Wright Brothers National Memorial, and Fort Raleigh National Historic Site in North Carolina.

Murray’s knowledge, skills, and experiences gained over his 27 year career with the National Park Service (NPS) have provided him with outstanding leadership skills and an impressive record of accomplishments in a wide variety of areas.

Mike began his career with the NPS in 1978 as a Park Technician at Yellowstone National Park. Positions of increasing complexity and responsibility at Everglades, Yosemite, New River Gorge National River, and Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, brought him to his current position as Deputy Superintendent, Cape Cod National Seashore in Massachusetts. He has served there for the last eight years, including serving as acting Superintendent at Cape Cod for nearly one year. He is a graduate of the University of Virginia with a Bachelor’s degree in biology.

“Many of Mike’s experiences and accomplishments relate directly to the issues, programs, and challenges that are central to this position. Mike is a superintendent who knows how to reach out to diverse interest groups and work together to find solutions. I believe we have found just the right person for success” Regional Director Hooks said.

Reaching back to fond childhood memories of wonderful family vacations to the Outer Banks, Mike remembers being enthralled with the spectacular coastal landscape, rich history, and many recreational opportunities. “My family and I are very excited to be moving to the Outer Banks. I am looking forward to working closely with the park staff and the local communities, partners, and organizations on the many challenging issues facing the Outer Banks Group” said Murray.

Located on the barrier islands of North Carolina's Outer Banks, the National Park Service Outer Banks Group administers Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Fort Raleigh National Historic Site and Wright Brothers National Memorial. These special sites of our nation's cultural heritage, natural resources, and recreational opportunities are visited by over three million visitors annually.
