Saturday, Sept. 29 is National Public Lands Day, an annual event that provides opportunities for the public to participate in volunteer projects.

During National Public Lands Day 2006, nearly 90,000 volunteers built trails and bridges, planted trees and plants, removed trash and invasive plants, as well as numerous other projects. Volunteers worked at 600 sites in all 50 states. It is estimated that volunteers and their community partners contributed $10 million in improvements to their federal, state, and local public lands.

In honor of National Public Lands Day, no entrance fees will be charged at Wright Brothers National Memorial on Sept. 29.

Individuals interested in volunteering with the National Park Service at Wright Brothers National Memorial, Fort Raleigh National Historic Site or Cape Hatteras National Seashore can call (252) 473-2111 x164 to contact park supervisors for volunteer opportunities.
