Superintendent Mike Murray announced today that Saturday, September 27, 2008, Wright Brothers National Memorial will celebrate the 15th annual National Public Lands Day by offering free admission to park visitors. In addition, on Sunday, September 28, 2008, an additional “fee free” day for all visitors will be instituted in honor of newly naturalized citizens. This is an invitation for visitors to visit and enjoy one of America’s national treasures.

The staff at Wright Brothers National Memorial, Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, and Cape Hatteras National Seashore would like to encourage the park’s friends, neighbors and visitors to take advantage of these national “fee free” days by getting reacquainted with their local national parks.  While entrance fees for passengers in both private and commercial vehicles will be waived, recreation “user fees” such as permit fees, camping fees and lighthouse tour fees will not be waived.

During National Public Lands Day 2007 110,000 volunteers improved our public lands for recreation by assisting land managers in hands-on work. Projects included building trails and bridges, planting trees and plants, removing trash and invasive plants, in addition to numerous other projects. Volunteers worked at 1,300 locations in all 50 states.
