As a unit of the National Park System, Wilson's Creek National Battlefield is committed to the protection of our resources, as well as providing visitors with a safe park experience.

All accidents should be reported to park staff in person at the visitor center or by calling 417-732-2662.

Safety considerations for your visit may include:

  • Maintain a speed limit of 25 mph when driving on the Tour Road and obey all traffic laws.
  • Do not approach, touch, or disturb wildlife.
  • Keep pets must on a leash not more than six feet long
  • Spring and early summer experience severe weather including high winds, hail, flash floods, and tornados. Be weather aware before you head out.
  • Summer months are frequently hot and humid. Take water and wear a hat, sturdy shoes and protective clothing when outdoors.
  • Ticks, chiggers and stinging insects are common. Use repellent and check yourself for ticks during and after your outing.
  • Swimming and wading in Wilson Creek or any water source in the battlefield is not permitted. Jumping from trees or banks is also prohibited.
  • Drinking water from any source except water fountains is not recommended.
  • If walking, biking, or jogging, stay inside the six-foot-wide lane that is specifically marked for those activities. Consider wearing high visibility colors.
  • Climbing on cannons is hazardous. Stay off.
  • Poison ivy is abundant in many areas. Familiarize yourself with this plant and avoid contact with it.
  • Park only in designated areas. When leaving your car, lock your vehicle and store all valuables out of view.

Weather

Spring and fall are moderate in temperature and humidity. Summer, particularly July through August, is typically hot and humid. Winter, particularly November through February, is cold with snow and ice possible. Seldom does a snow cover last more than two or three days.
