WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Volunteers at Whitman Mission National Historic Site will join thousands of people across the nation for National Public Lands Day, the largest single-day volunteer effort focused on public lands. The event will be held on September 23 from 12:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. and includes a brown bag lunch, a meet-and-greet with park staff, a ranger talk, and an invasive species clean-up. Volunteers will earn a coupon for a single day of fee-free entry to any National Park Service site after the event.

Volunteer should register before the event. To register as a volunteer, call 509-522-6360, email whmi_volunteer@nps.gov, or sign-up through volunteer.gov. Volunteers will work outside and should wear closed-toed shoes, long pants, long sleeves, sunscreen, and bring a water bottle.

Coordinated by the National Environmental Education Foundation (NEEF), National Public Lands Day brings together volunteers from coast to coast to improve and restore the lands and facilities that people across America use and enjoy every day.  Each year, National Public Lands Day volunteers provide tens of millions of dollars’ worth of services in one day that would otherwise take limited park staff months to accomplish.

Whitman Mission National Historic Site is located 8 miles west of Walla Walla, WA on Whitman Mission Road. The visitor center is currently open seven days a week from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Admission is free.
