WASHINGTON — On Monday, July 26, the National Park Service (NPS) will begin work to improve the streets around Lafayette Park including Pennsylvania Avenue NW, Madison Place and Jackson Place.

During the road construction, the NPS will temporarily close these streets and post detours to guide pedestrians and bicyclists around the closures, which are expected to last until fall 2021. Lafayette Park will remain open during construction.

The Federal Highway Administration will manage construction activities and will complete the work in three phases. This will involve removing the old pavement, repairing joints in the road and installing new pavement. The new pavement will be a similar brown color to the existing road surface.

The NPS will take special steps to preserve the historic landscape of Lafayette Park and will not remove or change the granite pavers on either end of Pennsylvania Avenue or on any of the area’s sidewalks.
