"We want to extend an invitation to everyone to come out to the park to help us celebrate the launching of a new park program - the Summer Lecture Series" said Superintendent Tucker Blythe. "We are excited about this series, as we are featuring speakers from Roger Mills County and beyond. In fact, our first speaker will be the curator of the Hinton Museum, Art Peters, who will present a slide show, entitled the "California Road", which many of you know goes through portions of Roger Mills County."
On June 29th, Cheyenne residents, Loren Smith and Scott Martin, will discuss how they came up with the idea of forming the park's first living history group, Troop J, 7th U.S. Cavalry. Loren and Scott have spent a great deal of time learning about the life of troopers during the 1860s, and want to share this journey with you. They will bring period uniforms, field tents, cavalry gear and weapons to tell their story.
Other speakers you might know will be local historian, Dale Tracy, local rancher and archeologist Pete Thurmond and Melvena Heisch, Deputy Oklahoma State Historic Preservation Officer. Watch your local newspaper for more details on other speakers in the coming weeks.
