Sitting Bull Descendant to Speak at Washita Battlefield NHS

Washita Battlefield National Historic Site proudly announces a special program highlighting Hunkpapa Lakota Sioux Sitting Bull. The featured speaker will be Sitting Bull's great grandson, Ernie LaPointe. The presentation scheduled November 3, 2012 at 6:00pm, will be held at the Washita Battlefield National Historic Site's visitor center gallery.

In his many years of determining his lineal traces through DNA and genealogical research, Mr. LaPointe will recount family stories and illustrate the famous leader's life. LaPointe is currently working on a new documentary on Sitting Bull, and has authored a recent publication titled: "Sitting Bull, His Life and Legacy," which isavailable for sale at the Washita Battlefield NHS bookstore. This book reveals the rich oral history of his family and the stories of Sitting Bull's childhood, and his reputation as a fierce warrior.

As the park site approaches its November 27, 1868 anniversary date of the Washita attack, this program will provide insight into genealogical methods of tracing family lineage, the NAGPRA process, and demonstrate the connections of the Great Plains Tribes.

The presentation is free to the public. For more information, please contact (580) 497-2742, or visit the park website at
