On October 30, 2008, Vicksburg National Military Park and the Friends of Vicksburg National Military Park and Campaign joined in celebrating their Centennial Challenge Partnership Project to replace several removed or missing battery position and organizational tablets and to conserve statuary, monuments, and markers throughout the park landscape.
The project was made possible by the National Park Service Centennial Challenge which provided federal funds to match donations of individuals and organizations. This project, along with others throughout the nation, will help prepare national parks for another century of conservation, preservation, and enjoyment in time for the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service in 2016.
