Pointe Coupee Artillery, Co. A Regimental Monument

Multiple monument located on Confederate Avenue at the Great Redoubt (Park Tour Stop 11). Also a monument and an iron tablet located outside of Vicksburg National Military Park, on the east side of Confederate Avenue approximately 0.5 miles south of All Saints School. Originally attached to Brig. Gen. Albert Rust's Brigade, of Maj. Gen. Franklin Gardner's 3d Military District at Port Hudson, LA, Lt. Gen. John C. Pemberton's Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana, and commanded by Lt. C. L. Ilsley. The company was assigned to Brig. Gen. Abraham Buford's 2d Brigade of Maj. Gen. William Wing Loring's Division, Lt. Gen. John C. Pemberton's Army of Vicksburg.

During the Yazoo Pass Expedition, one section (Thompson's) of this unit was retained as an unattached organization to Maj. Gen. William Wing Loring's Confederate Forces, and commanded by Lt. J. J. Thompson. The rest of the battery was attached to Brig. Gen. Abraham Buford's 2d Brigade of Maj. Gen. William Wing Loring's Division, Lt. Gen. John C. Pemberton's Army of Vicksburg, and commanded by Capt. A. Bouancharud and Lt. John Yoist.

At the beginning of the Vicksburg Campaign, the brigade was at Port Hudson, LA, reorganized, and ordered to Tullahoma, TN, on or about 15 April 1863, but was recalled on 18 April 1863, and participated in the Battle of Champion Hill on 16 May 1863. The battery became detached from Gen. Loring's Division at Champion Hill and retreated into Vicksburg with Gen. Pemberton's Army.

It was then assigned to Brig. Gen. Seth M. Barton's 1st Brigade, of Maj. Gen. Carter L. Stevenson's Division, for the duration of the siege.
