The Oaks Preservation and Rehabilitation

The Tuskegee Institute National Historic Site is undertaking a construction and preservation project at The Oaks, the historic home of Booker T. Washington, in Tuskegee, Alabama. DRI, Inc. is the contractor for the project.Built in 1899, The Oaks is a Queen Anne-style home and an important part of Booker T. Washington’s legacy. The project will be completed in phases to preserve and rehabilitate the historic structure. Each phase will focus on specific preservation and rehabilitation needs.

Phase 1 Exterior Improvements

The first phase focuses on exterior rehabilitation, including roof and window work, replacement of deteriorated beams, structural repairs to the front balcony and porch, and other exterior preservation work. Phase 1 is anticipated to be completed by December 2026. Additional phases of the project will address other preservation needs as work progresses.

Visiting The Oaks

The Oaks remains open during the project by reservation only. Tours are limited to five visitors per reservation. Large groups and walk-in tours cannot be accommodated during this period.
