The Oaks is currently closed to visitors due to an ongoing preservation and rehabilitation project. Tuskegee Institute National Historic Site is undertaking a construction and preservation project at The Oaks, the historic home of Booker T. Washington, in Tuskegee, Alabama. DRI, Inc. is the contractor for the project. Built in 1899, The Oaks is a Queen Anne-style home and an important part of Booker T. Washington’s legacy. The project will be completed in phases, with each phase addressing specific preservation and rehabilitation needs to help protect and preserve this historic structure for future generations. Phase 1: Exterior Improvements The first phase of the project focuses on exterior rehabilitation and preservation. Work includes roof and window improvements, replacement of deteriorated beams, structural repairs to the front balcony and porch, and other necessary exterior preservation work. Phase 1 is anticipated to be completed by December 2026. Additional phases of the project will address other preservation needs as work progresses.
