NTS 50th Anniversary

Celebrate in Steelville, Missouri

The National Park Service, in partnership with Deloris Grey Wood and the Missouri Chapter of the Trail of Tears Association, will host a 50th anniversary celebration of the National Trails System Act on National Trails Day, June 2, 2018. A Cherokee Removal Remembrance Ceremony will take place at the Steelville City Park. It will honor the Cherokee who walked through Steelville and crossed into Crawford County, Missouri 180 years ago. Junior Ranger activities will be available for children after the ceremony. Sponsors include the City of Steelville, the Steelville Public Schools, the Missouri Humanities Council, Crawford County, and the Steelville Chamber of Commerce.

Celebrate in Decatur, Alabama

On October 27, 2018 the Trail of Tears Association, the City of Decatur, Alabama, and the National Park Service will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the National Trails System Act during ALABAMA 200, the Decatur Bicentennial. Attendees may participate in a guided walking tour of river landing sites in Decatur and a bus tour to Tuscumbia to view related sites.
