Incompatible New Construction
The playground adjacent to this 1923 recreation
center (left + center) is important in defining the character
of the site and an integral feature of the complex.
As part of a rehabilitation project, thirteen new townhouses (right) were built on the playground. Because of their size and placement on the site, this new infill construction effectively alters the playground and its historic relationship to the recreation center buildings. Reducing the number of townhouses, together with sensitive siting, would have helped retain an open feeling on the corner of the property and provided a vista to the historic buildings. Photos:
