Visit National Historic Landmarks in Sitka

The historic landmarks in Sitka are portals in time to significant events in Alaska history.Locations of battles and fort sites, churches, schools, military installations and more provide us with a glimpse into the rich and diverse past of Sitka, and its substantial role in Alaskan (and American) history.Within a few short miles, history enthusiasts can treat themselves to a “choose your own adventure” experience, which they can adapt to their own preferences. In the “downtown” area of Sitka one can visit up to six historic landmarks, all within several blocks of each other. If transportation is available, one could see all eight sites in a day. For those who wish to explore further, there are even more properties on the National Register of Historic Places in Sitka.This information guide with a map can get you started on your trip back in time.
The downstairs of the Russian Bishop's House (Stop #1 on the National Historic Landmarks Map) is a self guided tour of museum exhibits.Tours may be available of the upstairs portion of the building, which was restored to it's 1853 appearance. It is among the best surviving examples of a 19th Century Russian residence in the United States. If indoor tours of this building are unavailable, other options include a virtual tour, or a short film, which you can enjoy from the comfort of your personal electronic device.

Historic buildings are accessible by wheelchair on the first floor only.
Pets are not allowed inside historic buildings, however they are welcome to join you at all outdoor locations.
