"The industrious Puritans used iron in farming and for cooking, it was traded with Native Americans and other colonies, it held together their fishing boats and houses, and indeed, their entire economy...[In order for them to become] self-sufficient and independent, the Puritans set out on a quest to build an ironworks on the Saugus River."
The Saugus Iron Works official park film, Iron Works on the Saugus, provides an overview of the creation, operation, and historical significance of Saugus Iron Works in the 17th century. It can be viewed at the Saugus Iron Works Museum or on our website.
