Take a hike on the Jack-O-Lantern Branch Trail

Explore the Jack-O’-Lantern Heritage Branch Trail, a one-and-a-half-mile route through the fields and forests of Piedmont, Virginia. Much of this land was once part of the Burroughs plantation. The open fields and transitions into forested areas demonstrate evidence of past cultivation. The trail passes through habitats supporting a diverse range of birds, plants, wildflowers, and small animals in forest and stream ecosystems. The tour begins after you pass the tobacco barn. In about 0.2 miles, you will reach an intersection that marks the start of the loop, which you can follow in either direction. Trail guides are available at the visitor center.
The Sparks Cemetery is located along the trail route. This is a small burial site. The small, flat rocks used as gravestones were likely collected from a nearby field. One stone is marked with the date 1823 and the initials SID below. The year 1823 is thirty-three years before Booker T. Washington was born on this property. At that time, the owners may have cleared this area for farming and established the graveyard for family members or enslaved individuals.
