Hanford: Picnic at Kurtzman Park

NPS/BURGHART
African Americans who worked at the Hanford Site from the mid 1940s into the 1960s were segregated and confined to living in East Pasco. This section of Pasco lacked many city services including a city park. Local children worked together in the late 1950s to create a baseball diamond in East Pasco by clearing a vacant lot of tumbleweeds and by filling holes in with shovels and wiring in a backstop.
This neighborhood park eventually developed into Kurtzman Park, which offers a playground, trails, picnic area and soccer fields.
