Essential Question

What would the history of Tumacácori look like to someone who had witnessed it all?

Objective

Identify at least 2 key events in Tumacácori's history

Background

Pancho is a vermilion flycatcher who has led a VERY long life in the Santa Cruz River valley. As a non-human observer, he is an excellent neutral party to witness the drama of Tumacácori play out among its human residents.

The moral ambiguities of Tumacácori's history and the Spanish colonial endeavors are challenging to comprehend, even for adults. The scrapbook attempts to make these problematic questions accessible for young children.

What would it be like to encounter a technologically advanced society that wishes to colonize your homeland?
What would be the benefits?
What would be the costs?
Once the mission experiment ended and after 70 years of neglect and damage, how does the newly formed National Park Service undertake its stewardship of the ruins?
