Essential Question
What are invasive species and how do we manage them?
Objective
Students who participate will learn about invasive species in the Great Lakes region and will focus on the life and management of sea lamprey in the Great Lakes.
Background
These videos are recorded from live programs that were given on 3/12/21 and 3/18/21. When the presenter in the video prompts students to enter something in the chat box, please pause the video to give your class time to respond.
Preparation
Please send an email to piro_education@nps.gov with the school name and address, grade level, and number of students who watched the videos. We will send you an information packet that includes a map and several park brochures for your classroom.
Procedure
Teacher will lead lessons at their own pace.
1) Optional. Download 'Jargon Unplugged' activity. This is designed to orient students to terminology used by land managers when controlling invasive species.
2) Watch these videos on the Youtube playlist. Videos range from 7-13 minutes each, with times to pause for student engagement. Videos need to be watched in order, but can be broken up over multiple class periods. There is an audio described version for each video.
3) Optional. Download 'Sea Lamprey Suck!' Kinesthetic activities where students will learn about characteristics of sea lampreys, and the interrelationships between this invader and other species, and the lake environment. Activities can be adapted for indoor or outdoor use.
