"Battle of the Boats" is a 1 hour and 30 minutes program on-site at the Prairie Acadian Cultural Center in Eunice, Louisiana. Students will learn about supply and demand of resources, landscapes of Louisiana, and different boats used by people in Louisiana historically.
Through this education program, students will discuss how the local resources and landscape influence boat design and construction. They'll learn about the different designs of boats in Louisiana throughout history, starting with the dugout by indigenous peoples.
After discussing, students work in teams to create their own boat out of a limited selection of recycled materials. They then test how well their boat works through competing in the Battle of the Boats. Students place their boats in a mini pool to see how well the boat works given different environmental conditions like high wind, low water depth, and narrow navigation.
