Fatal Crash on the George Washington Memorial Parkway

Date: June 14, 2016

Alexandria Va.– United States Park Police are investigating a fatal 2 vehicle crash involving a passenger car and mid-sized shuttle bus, on the George Washington Memorial Parkway near Stratford Lane. One passenger on the bus has died.

The bus, carrying foreign visitors from China, had 18 passengers plus the driver. The passenger car had two occupants. Thirteen passengers from the bus as well as the driver and passenger from the car were transported to area hospitals, three with critical injuries. The driver of the bus was uninjured.

The bus was travelling northbound and the passenger car was travelling southbound south of the intersection with Stratford Lane. A head-on collision resulted in the bus being tipped onto its left side and sliding off of the east side of the roadway. The passenger car also left the roadway and came to rest in a wooded area on the west side of the lanes.

Witnesses state that several passersby, some possibly members of the military, stopped at the scene and lifted the bus back onto its wheels. These same people are said to have administered aid to the wounded until emergency personnel arrived on the scene.

At this time road closures remain in effect for all traffic between Stratford Lane and Mount Vernon Circle on the George Washington Memorial Parkway.
