Nez Perce National Historical Park is a unique national park in that it consists of 38 sites, which together tell the story of the nimíipuu (Nez Perce). These sites are spread over much of the traditional homeland of the nimíipuu in present-day Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington. Some sites tell the story of Chief Joseph and his tribe, who in June 1877 left Oregon in an attempt to reach freedom in Canada to avoid being forced onto a reservation. Pursued by U.S. Army cavalry forces, their journey ended with Chief Joseph's surrender in the Montana Territory. Other sites commemorate the stories and history of the nimíipuu and their interaction with explorers, fur traders, missionaries, settlers, and gold miners who moved through or into the area.
