The Natural Resource Condition Assessment (NRCA) Program provides framework, funding, and publishing support to parks to aid in the synthesis and documentation of natural resource conditions. Condition assessment reports are a tool to describe selected park resources, record a snapshot of their current condition, identify trends in condition, and determine potential or current threats and stressors. Understanding the condition and trend of natural resources is key for parks and NPS planners to appropriately prioritize and allocate stewardship resources.
 

The 45-ft Little River Falls is one of the main attractions at Little River Canyon. As Little River is almost solely dependent on rainfall for its flow, the size of the waterfall can vary greatly from day to day, especially in the summer.

Little River, flowing across northeast Alabama, is unique in that it flows for almost its entire length on top of Lookout Mountain. Over eons of time, Little River has created some of the deepest canyons in the Southeast, some towering over 600 feet above the river. Little River Canyon National Preserve protects Little River and over 15,000 acres along it. Forested uplands, waterfalls, canyon rims, and sandstone cliffs offer a variety of recreational activities, including fishing, hiking, bicycling, horseback riding, and kayaking.
